Rethinking Student Success: A New Horizon

The Spark for Change

Twenty years ago, visiting schools who were thinking differently - bigger - about student success was the catalyst for my journey to reimagine 21st-century education. As a former 4th grade teacher and school leader, I was once consumed with test scores. I believed they defined our students' futures. But then, as a new superintendent in Kentucky, a challenge from my board prompted a pivotal shift.

The Transformational Quest

In our small district of 1,800 students, we dared to dream bigger. Together with teachers, principals, and students, we explored and learned. We saw students engaging in remarkable, and very real, work – from advising the Ground Zero Museum Board to building generators from old bicycle parts. These experiences inspired me to think much differently, and bigger, about what school could be.

A New Mission

Since then, my roles have varied, but my mission has remained constant:

• Inspire a new vision for student success and new thinking about how we design learning experiences.
• Work alongside teachers and leaders to co-design transformative learning journeys and the systems needed for support.

I'm thrilled to continue this mission through elevatED studios. We collaborate with educators nationwide who share our vision for a broader, future-focused education.
